Further study

Write blog can promote learning, to write articles, naturally can not is broadly understood and to understand in order to write out. This will promote continuous learning and thinking in some areas.

Blog is often recorded is the moment of inspiration, the perception of things, after several days of reflection and practice results, solution to a problem, etc., these are wealth. Will go on record.

Reflects growth

Write blog, can reflect the thinking process, rather than just thinking about the results. On an issue or area, never learned to understand, from the learned to familiar, from the familiar to the master. This record a person thinking and problem solving process. After a long time, to see their previous articles, you feel progress?

Character of Country Parks in U.K

st-james-park

Urbanization development to a certain stage, increasing the proportion of the urban population, the population density reached a certain height, people’s needs and lifestyle occurred great change, in the increasingly advocate of ecology and environment, the balance of the background we need to segment and expand the types of urban green space system.

Nearly half a century, both developed and developing countries, in large and medium-sized cities around appeared a series of diffusion phenomenon known as the “suburbanization”, center city population, industrial, commercial and residential elements continuous to the area around the migration and expansion directly embezzled near the city of agricultural land, especially farmland and rural landscape. Urbanization provides a more material enjoyment to people, also drawn a man and nature of distance, coupled with urban rapid pace of life and the intense work, make people physically and mentally under the double pressure,

Comprehensive countries such as the UK and China’s Hong Kong region definition of country parks: Country Park is is located in the outskirts of the city, there is a good natural landscape, country vegetation and pastoral style, and to leisure and entertainment for the purpose of the park. The country park with more cultural meanings in english. Country park concept is to provide a series of natural and physical activity for urban residents. On the basis of relatively low consumption give people different services and leisure opportunities, and support many aspects of development: health, social, cultural, sports, the arts, education and lifelong learning.

Bring in the sixties of the 20th century the British economy rapid development of urban economic and social structure has a series of changes, the main characteristics of performance for the following three points:

1) the rapid development of the industrial town;

2) the rapid advance of railway construction;

3) the spread of private cars.

In the 1960s, due to the rapid development of the British car industry, private car prices very low, at that time, the road system is still in a stage that can make people happy driving. Many people have no destination drive to play outside, which has negative effects on the rural areas. In order to protect the countryside special status and environmental quality, sensitive area in the outskirts of the protection, 1966 government issued a white paper called for establishing a country park and picnic grounds. Its function is to relieve the stress of increasing urban residents life, providing a remote and undisturbed leisure area.

Country park in Britain has experienced 3 stages of development:

The first stage is the preparation stage, in fact, the early visitors to the park is still owning a private car, middle-class white people. In the subsequent development, the government pay more attention to public transport, emphasizing the participation of different social class groups, people-oriented service concept gradually replaced once upon a time in the land oriented concept.

The second stage is mainly in the period of stagnation, some parks agency funds were recovered, some park to make ends meet, British village committee at this stage gradually adopted new projects to strengthen the role of country parks in the whole social system.

The third stage is the country parks in England Renaissance, as a important recreation and tourism resources of the country park, by the attention of governments at all levels, village committee formulated plans to revitalize and protect country park, implement the improved management and safety protection measures, to achieve the purpose of repair of public assets.

Because located at the edge of the city, many country park is essentially plays a connecting urban and rural transition effects, at the University of Manchester in the country research institutions were “rural to urban sustainable development research — Country Park as the transition of landscape to determine on the edge of the city, country park through a combination of agricultural production, to provide land for use of residents and entertainment facilities. Researchers interpret problems include not only the pressure of urban development, agriculture is faced with difficulties and how to urban residents to improve the quality of life. Therefore, the edge of the city is the main area for the realization of the goal of sustainable development and the need to protect.

Change of the European city landscape during the industrial revolution

82864876-1

The ancient Rome empire marked Europe entered the feudal society of the middle ages. Due to farm for a Sunday Germanic south, the center of social life to the countryside, handicraft industry and commerce is very depressed, cities are in a state of decline, the population of Rome also reduced to 4 million.

Medieval Europe split into many small feudal kingdoms, feudal cut drama and wars, many with a defense of the castle. In Europe in the Middle Ages church is a powerful force. The church occupied the center position of the city, the Church of the large volume and towering spires has become the dominant factor in the layout of urban space and the skyline and the medieval European urban landscape has a unique charm.

After the 10th century, the handicraft industry and commerce gradually on the rise, some cities get rid of the rule of feudal lords, become the autonomous city, public buildings, such as city hall, the customs office and club industry occupy the dominant position of urban space. With the industrial and commercial prosperity, manymedieval city finally break through the castle, continue to expand outwards.

After fourth Century, the Renaissance is the budding period of European capitalism, science, art and technologyhave been developed rapidly. Under the influence of humanism, many medieval cities were rebuilt alterations tend to be concentrated in some local areas, such as square building group. The cities of Italy built many classical style and rigorous composition of square and streets, such as St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and Venice’s Piazza San Marco.

In the second half of the 17th century, the nascent capitalist urgently need the powerful state machinery to provide shelter, the bourgeoisie and the countries have formed an alliance, against the feudal rule and the power of the church established a number of centralized monarchical power autocracy. Effects of classicism in the urban construction, this kind of style in the 17th and 18th century by European royal keen and sought after, to Pope Urban VIII, Louis 14 on behalf of the European nobility built waterscape and palaces and gardens, without exception, mainly embodies a grand momentum, and created unique French Versailles Palace the main water.During this period, the fountain sculpture is divisor given solemn solemn and grand exquisite artistic characteristics, there are many fine arts, such as Italian fountain designed by Bernini statue of Poseidon, the combination of the statue and water has become a classic. Later the Rococo art trend make waterscapeapplication also be on the soft, charming and some artificial features.

Industrial revolution, also known as the industrial revolution, the early history of capitalist industrialization, namely capitalist production completed the stage from the workshop handicraft industry to machine industry transition. Is the machine production gradually replaced manual labor, large-scale factory production instead of individual workshop manual production of a production and technological revolution, and later extended to other industries.

The industrial revolution so that population growth may become a hitherto unknown. Although millions of Europeans migrated overseas if there during the 19th century, 1914 in continental Europe, the population is 1750 three times above. The population explosion is the economy and the progress of medicine. Agricultural and industrial productivity increased by a large margin, means that growth in the agricultural, food, shelter and other necessities of life data. The population growth is due to medical advances, due to many public health measures.Although the birth rate was little growth or even no growth, but the mortality rate is due to prevent or cure the disease and a sharp decline. Vaccination and isolation of infected patients, to protect the water supply, master knowledge about antimicrobial agents, all of which make northwest Europe, the mortality rate is reduced from 30% of the 1800 at least per thousand to about 15 per cent per thousand in 1914. So European populations from 1750 to 14000 sharply rose to 1800 years of 18800 million, 1850 26600, 1900 40100 million and 1914 46300 million. This growth rate is much higher than other European regions of the world, that changed the balance of the world’s population.

The industrial revolution caused the city of hitherto unknown world society. There has been a city since the new stone age, Neolithic period, the invention of agriculture leads to support urban center of surplus grain. Afterthousands of years,

The number of the city’s size depends on the surrounding area can produce food. Therefore, the most populouscity are in the valley area. With the development of large-scale river transport and maritime transport, the city can specialize in the trade and industry, so as to enable the population growth to exceed the agriculture of the mainland population limits.

However, the modern world caused by the industrial revolution. The city is much more important. Because the factory system replaced the dispersion in the family processing system, a large number of people into the newindustrial center. A huge new city population because of the food from all over the world and get support. Medical technology and progress has made possible the elimination of previously had large number of kills the urban residents of the plague, and even may make city life more tolerable and more palatable. These include importantprogress: an adequate supply of clean water, improve centralized drainage system and garbage.

Economic Assessment System of House Planning in Britain

Gerard-and-Christina-White

British urban planning laws and regulations starting in the 19th century, but until the 20th century, the 1960s, before the beginning of the comprehensive reflection of urban planning practice, the focus of urban planning from physical planning to exploration of the Social Sciences; to the end of the 20th century, with the development of more new city, the focus turned to the thinking on economic issues, to ensure that urban development projects under the market economy smoothly. Since the middle period of the eighties of the twentieth century, accompanied by a British soaring land prices and housing demand increased sharply, housing planning system corresponding to further improve the assessment of housing market demand, to evaluate its feasibility under the background of market economy has become the general policy housing planning process. So, planners, architects, real estate analyst (surveyor) and landscape designers together to become an integral part of the planning process in a key role, real estate development professional, and many British universities have also been incorporated into the Department of urban planning in one direction.

Good urban planning and urban design should has its economic feasibility, and meet the social and economic development needs, and promote the development of urban economy, and bring the corresponding social and environmental benefits. England is one of the most densely populated regions of Europe, so Britain imposed strict urban planning control, to improve the urban development densities become in recent years the British urban planning especially the hot issues on the planning of housing. In order to achieve the sustainable development of urban construction, planning should achieve social ecology — — win win win of economy, lack of social and environmental benefits of economic demands does not conform to the requirements of sustainable development. The premise of British housing economic evaluation of planning is to ensure that planning can meet the needs of social development, and in a certain extent, improve the living environment and living quality. Economic benefit itself involves two aspects: direct economic benefits of investment projects in the development process, and through the social and environmental benefits and non-direct economic value added.

Due to the implementation of city planning in the United Kingdom than the United States and other European countries are more stringent, so pay more attention to the formulation of science and the implementation of the feasibility. In the planning of housing, follow the law of the development of urban economy, considered qualified urban planning or urban design should the market demand, residential development costs and profits into consideration. On the other hand, development, promote the realization of housing planning, development gains become economic evaluation is one of the most important link, thereby affecting the process of planning and space efficiency.

Economic evaluation has two aspects of macroscopic and microcosmic. Micro level assessment of the key lies in the development of the planning and design is brought directly to the profits, thus ensuring the healthy operation of the market supply chain; macro level evaluation is more complex, often including social and environmental benefits are likely to bring direct economic benefits, such as social justice, community activities, high-quality community environment brought about community and economic benefits added value. From the housing demand to assess profitability, is a from the macro to the micro, from the social demand to the planning and design to construction and operation of all aspects of participation and collaboration. Different professional division intertwined to form a relatively complete economic evaluation framework.

Summary for ‘Saving space, sharing time: integrated infrastructures of daily Life in cohousing’ (Group 5–Post by Beem)

IMG_0936

With the demand of fast growing population and changes of the family structure, as well as the growing interest in cohousing, there is a trend of communal dining in the work centred culture with isolation and hurricanes feeling.

Cohousing has the unique feature is that has greater scope for mutuality, cooperation, reciprocity, and exchange than the household; another is more routinely interconnected than the conventional street or apartment block. As a privatised public space, the common space is used as daily living.

However, there are some reasons for the neglected living experience of cohousing, one is that the impact on social policy and urban planning has been determined by developers and new urbanism. Another is that it is the method of co-work of society and institutions, and the difference from other new social movements is colocation.

There is a theory of “pockets” and “projects”, projects can be the shorter or longer plan for meal or building houses, and this is shaped by individuals, and pockets represent the local culture and habits or moral aspects. Besides, Braudel argues every phenomena have their own temporal phases, Bergson more likely to highlight the liquidity and flexibility of time. Besides, it is important to learn, to respect the multiplicity of rhythms. It is the community engagement of public space and time.

ideabook_diagram_semipublic           Fig 2

Cohousing increases the types of public and semi-public space, designers use user engagement to make spaces reasonable, participatory practices can cultivate public time of engagement and learning for people, the shift work will increase the social response and social transformation. But collective living does not means the leisure time or reduction of house work, but through protecting environment and volunteer service as well as community activity to gain more active.

There is a long history of people sharing physical spaces and community activities in social settlements and co-working. Designers need to aware the external ecology and residential, community, and the seasons of growing. An important distinction typically made in cohousing, is the absence of a shared economy. There are about 4000 households living in USA, and about 5% of Danish households, but there are only 300 households in UK.

Cohousing opens up different temporalities in the moral codes, social spaces, and practical systems of sharing facilitated by the infrastructures of daily life in these particular settings. But these infrastructures are not for people to avoid reality, but to become more inspirational, changing with the time, changing people to learn. The mobilisation of local information and communication technologies is widespread in cohousing, and is used among collocated residents to increase face to face social interaction.

future-social-interaction

Fig 3

Every family will increase their trust and better impression through spending some public time. The infrastructures developed to support large communal meals also cultivate a unique rhythm. It is not only plan a meal, but also involves social and physical activities.

The interpersonal relations and historical memories of the group project development is not only the temporal phase, but also represents past and future.

The experience and conclusion in writing blog

why-blog

Blog is a quite necessary method to share your idea with each other, but nowadays, people so rely on social network, and try their best to community with people as quick and short as possible. But sometimes, if people are going to write or share something in which are more complicated, then they will need to use a blog, which is more suitable for writing longer article.

When I start to use this blog, I have to say, this kind of way to do the reflective writing is a totally a fresh experience for me. When I am doing the lecture, I need to do the blogs at the same time. Sometimes, it is quite difficult for me to get used of this, and can’t treat it as a formal way to reflect the things I learned from the class. But after I read some blogs, which were uploaded by my classmates, I released blog is not only a way to write things, but also a place for you to calm and deliberate the things you have done before. This is a quite amazing way to clear my mind up.

So, I felt quite excited on writing the blog then. Every time when I were reading somebody’s blogs or writing my own one, I was really jumping into the blog and enjoying the happiness right away. Then, we were beginning to have some self-direct meetings. We discussed things on those meetings, which were quite relax time for me. I remember there were two meetings, one was used to discuss the design of the website. We were trying to choose some styles, which were quite similar between each other, but we still cannot to select one of them, I think we just tried to do it almost perfect. And another is a meeting, which we had several short urban design movies at first.

And then we were talking about the advantages and disadvantages about those movies, and also helping each other to understand those movies. So, I must say this kind of meeting give us a lot of opportunities to know each other and help each other.

About the gains I had after I finished this programme, I think it is quite hard for me to treat those things as gains. So, I want to call them “experience”. I really love to write things here. From the very beginning, I wouldn’t like to spend a lot of time on it, I just wanted to do my design project. But now, after I rethink all those things I came through, I found that I cannot understand those lectures quite clear if I didn’t do those blog writing. Because I think, if I do not need to write those blogs, I wouldn’t to review the contents from those lectures. And also the blog system give us a huge place to post anything about urban design, so as for me, I will enlarge the quantity of reading, and know more things I didn’t know before. Even I only wrote five blogs, but in fact, I got a lot of gains than I expect. So, I have to say, the experience of participating in the blog is an unexpected harvest I can have at the end, I will also keep doing this in the future.

Chicago’s Lakefront Design–Sustainable Urban Planning

芝加哥5

Water can be used for many purposes. However, those waterfront, lakeside or river inside the city, if you do not use them, then, for a city, it is worthless, they will become to that kind of waterfront, which even people do not like or appreciate. Water plays an important role in contributing urban space, which is an element in local decision-making. The waterfront is a very precious resource and is also a rich opportunity for urban development. It is a chance to escape the pressure of living. People also get a chance to breathe fresh air in urban life. This is Charles Moore for an overview of the city’s waterfront.

10s

In 1893, it was found to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Americas, held the World’s Fair in Chicago. To this end, the Chicago lakefront, people built a magnificent classical architecture, wide boulevards and absolutely beautiful open space, showing that good urban planning to beautify the urban landscape, improve the appearance of the city dirty role played by change. Since then, the United States launched a ‘the city beautiful movement’. Fair hosted chief planner, Daniel Hudson Burnham became famous.

Currently, in the vicinity of Lake Michigan, the construction of the Lake green belt and Public Space in Lake District base on “Chicago Plan”, which made by Burnham and Bennett in 1909 developed . The protection and the limiting development for the lakefront and waterfront is a quite important step for keeping the features of Chicago.

In this plan, Burnham predicted: In the future, water transportation will be replaced by rail and road transport, for the city of Chicago, which started by water transport, recently, the renovation of the Chicago River and the north and south tributaries, stringing the contact between Michigan Lake and the Chicago River, and planning a series of terminal facilities on this basis. So, for the long-term development, the lake area should be protected as a permanent urban public space.

200911656931861

For the road system in the city centre, Burnham proposed an upper and lower layers of the transport system, which was designed to separate urban transport and cargo traffic. And also connected the double-deck of Chicago River stronger. In the city centre, he planned some broad commercial boulevards and avenues, and the centre became the focus point of the new radial road network. He offered to pay attention to the protection of the natural environment within the city limits, so that urban greening and lakeside green belt combined to form the city’s public space systems.

Burnham’s “Chicago Plan” is mainly focused on the protection and development of the lake area, it triggered a series of planning laws are mostly concerned with the lakefront, lake area is the main window to show the city. Throughout the lake area, in addition to this group is known as the Museum Quarter (Museum Campus) buildings, looking ahead, large areas of grass, trees and the main parking lots occupy the rest of those area, and this arrangement is the spirit, which emphasized in Burnham “Chicago plan”.

5247494911_15fa7957bf_z12ae27ced11g213

Burnham’s inspiration comes from those cities impressions on urban beautification and planning, such as the boulevard to Europe, the London’s Thames River and the canal city of Venice. In this, he hopes to build a specific plan, which will help to build a beautiful city of Chicago — both provide a good living and working environment for the public, and also enable them to fully enjoy the natural landscape here gives them pleasure. He was raised in the plan: “green public space should cover the entire city,” “starting everything from the lake, the lake belongs to the people”. In order to implement these ideas, he planned a series of the peninsula, beaches, yacht clubs, playgrounds and parks in the lakeside area, hope that through these beautiful public spaces and facilities to create a good quality of life. In Burnham’s plan, the most attractive places in eastern lakeside city planning areas: two 2.5 km-long lake extends into a large public pier, dock surrounded by two intermediate synthesis of a huge harbour, where you can set up marina, is enclosed waters and as a city, “vestibular garden” Grant Park cultural makeup of the city centre and public events together.

Growing Urban Space-a Neighbourhood in a Mountain City

5

Chongqing, an amazing and famous mountain city, which is located in the southwest of China. You can’t really see any bicycles here, but instead of that are numerous motorcycles, which spread all over the city areas, and run like the wind. So, the local people call them ‘Feidi’, which means ‘flying motorbike’. Sometimes, when I was walking in the city, there are thousands of buildings, which stand in absolutely steep slopes, and most of them have entrances in the middle part of the building, people, who are living in this city, seemingly like to climb up or down every day. So, I have to say I cannot really help myself to wonder at this miracle city.

3

I had a project before as my graduated design at the fifth year of my undergraduate course. My site place is in Chongqing, which called ‘Shibati District’. It’s a quite big area, which connects the riverside part at the lowest level and the commercial district at the highest level. I felt really shocked of this part of city. I read something call ‘Gated Community’ before, and recently, I read another article about this as well. ‘Gated community’ is not only for those formal neighbourhood, but it also can represent some area, which is in a special location. But I would not like to talk about something academically, what I really prepared to do is introducing this vivid and lovely place for the readers.

6After you step into this neighbourhood, the first thing, which you will definitely noticed, is the way you are going to follow. You have to choice climb up or climb down. Following the slab stone steps, you will see several tiny squares beside the route. People sit right there around a table, they may paly majiang together, or chat with each other and drink some tea in the meantime. Even those buildings, which are houses, are used as shops, restaurants and teahouses. Because of the lack of land, people tried their best to use every single space to community with people, and earn money for living. With less than ten minutes walking on steps, then a slope, which covered by the same slab stones, become to the main route. It’s not quite steep, so in the each side of the road, there are several stalls selling different kinds of goods right there. So, I feel the social activity will continue.People, who know each other, and make this place lively.

1

Then, when I was moving forward, I can see a market in front of me. And this part is the only area, which established on a flat land. So, I started looking around and turned around to see the way I stepped in. Then I felt surprised and shocked again. Because even I knew this area is a slum, but I cannot image before that those old housing buildings are being protected quite nice, and we I saw those steps I walked, I still felt I just jumped into some underworld, which I don’t know. Just like the tree we climbed when we were children, I would like to describe this neighbourhood as a growing space, which are full of energy and extremely warm and vivid.

2

Then, I spent two days on this place and some other places around here. I took some pictures ,let them tell the story to you then.

‘Qianhai Water City’— Functional Landscape Urbanism

csm_07_f37157d1d9

The site, which has been planned as a new urban area, has an unanticipated prospect. This city district has 3 underground lines, 2 tube lines and several expressways inside there, which help this urban area to connect with those highly developed cities or districts around it. So, obviously, the plan for this area is not only about the changes between ports and cities, but also about the remainder spaces for those expressway network and a functional landscape for the urban area in the future.

So, for achieving a higher standard central urban area, the government launched the international consulting activities for Qinghai City planning. Eventually, the No.7 planning called ‘Qianhai Water City’, which was made by a American company—‘James Corner Field Operations’, wins the match.

The designer leaded the water into the city area, then by broadening the existing flowing rivers and drains, and designing five waterfront corridors, the 18 km2 large area is divided into five functional areas of moderate scale. Each zone has a different structural nneighborhoods different textures, and different personalities, mixed commercial and industrial capabilities. Neighborhoods also showed different levels, isolating the ground and the underground transportation meanwhile, public transportation are trying to connect the Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

The project also brought a high-density urban environment while focusing on ecological environment. Around the iconic coastline, there are a variety of architectural forms and cultural entertainment, and has easily accessibility. It is conceivable that in the future, the Qinhai Water City is not only a new waterfront Park and public space,or a pedestrian street and a garden, there will be innovative water infrastructure. This area will be a low-power, low-pollution energy saving demonstration area, and it will also be a vibrant, international city.

According to the plan, the future of the Qianhai City will form the basis of modern service industry, and actively play the advantages of the Qianhai port, which connect Shenzhen and Hong Kong, then, Qianhai district will be formed a distinctive pattern: Business Centre Area, Bonded and CDA and coastal recreation zone.

“Qianhai Water City” program designer, American design firm FO Chief Architect James. Kuna said that the program devised a new waterfront city, a city, which focus on water and ecology, at the same time, improving water and air through the creation of the landscape quality, and reducing the carbon emissions, then bringing the natural things into the city.

Kuna introduced the project has three main elements: the first is to bring water back to city, the filter the water and improve water quality. Meanwhile, a very important public landscape can also improve the space here. Secondly, the program proposes five development zones, and each zone has a different neighborhood structures different textures, and different personalities. These neighborhoods can be gradually phased construction.

The Continuous Monument—Superstudio

THE INTRODUCTION OF SUPERSTUDIO

“In the beginning we designed objects for production, designs to be turned into wood and steel, glass and brick or plastic – then we produced neutral and usable designs, then finally negative utopias, forewarning images of the horrors which architecture was laying in store for us with its scientific methods for the perpetuation of existing models.”

An architectural group (1966-1978)was founded in Florence by a group of radical young architects, SUPERSTUDIO was at the heart of the architecture and design fields until the late 1970s after it dismissed. Their realms for design were quite plentiful, they included photo-collages, films and exhibitions, then the 20th century design thinking was influenced by their unique design perspective.

Today, I also would like to introduce a point or a topic, which is mainly idea of this group. And this idea is actually a architectural model, which contains a amazing idea of urbanization. Also, it will bring us a new idea about community engagement as well.

Superstudio’s continuous monument and the Twelve Ideal Cities used negative point with critical intent. Superstudio is obviously involved in preaching, which through the use of illustrate and literal means of “popular” to analyze the architecture discipline. Between 1969 and 1970, they made a line on the possibilities of architecture as the instrument for attaching actions through the means of total urbanization. This work appears in the third catalog: THE CONTINUOUS MONUMENT.

There is a “modeate utopia” to imagine a  future in which is really closed and all architecture will be created with a single act. Superstudio was trying to understand the order on the earth. If people are using architecture to make the society in order, what will happen after we established some instruments and let them work? There are several signs for understanding the earth like The Great Wall of China, motorways, paralells and meridians.

For example, such as this conceptual project in New York City is quite classical. they put this super conceptual structure  to New York, which was planning to cover the Hudson and the point of peninsula joining Brooklyn and New Jersey. A bunch of skyscrapers were connected by this structure, which are built in the period without planning idea.

The grid is fundamentally a symbol of urban fabric and social network. The grid of social aspect that expands into notions of the social, political, electrical power grid. The grid is set up as a kind of community engagement on which the metropolis plays its own development. The city grid becomes the game-board of urbanism.

It’s funny the way that tangents work, while perhaps speaking more to the meanings of the grid in general, I think these extrapolations enable a re-conception of Superstudio’s provocative work as well, where the Continuous Monument can begin to be understood through associations of the grid in its many permutations, fictional and otherwise.”
